Ball Chain Glossary
"A" Coupling ∙ An attachment used to connect a ball chain to a bolt, screw, or rivet. Typically used for retaining purposes. Same general purpose as an end ring connector, but has two legs so that it is stronger but needs to be offset to become flush with the surface.
"A" Hook ∙ An attachment that essentially combines an "A" coupling with a C9 hook to form a single attachment that can be used for hanging signs, retaining small objects, or use for a variety of similar applications.
Assembly ∙ A custom built chain and attachment combination designed for a specific use.
"B" Coupling ∙ An attachment similar in appearance to a connector but with a hole in the back that enables it to attach to a jump ring or to form an adjustable loop. Also used as a connector for chain sizes above #8.
Connector ∙ An attachment used to join both ends of chain or splice together two separate chains. Used on chain sizes 1, 2, 3, 6, and 8 (for chain sizes above #8, use a "B" Coupling).
Crimp ∙ An open ball that is squeezed close on a jewelry chain to cover the connection point.
"D" Coupling ∙ An attachment similar to an "A" coupling in that it is used to connect a ball chain to a bolt, screw, or rivet for retaining purposes but with a rounded connection point that allows the chain to swivel.
Deco-Tuf ∙ A protective lacquer that provides the ultimate in corrosion protection.
End Ring ∙ An attachment that is permanently connected to the end of a ball chain to connect to different items. Similar in appearance to an end ring connector except that it does not have the attachment that enables a chain to be attached or detached.
End Ring Connector ∙ An attachment with the same general purpose as an "A" coupling in that it is used to connect a ball chain to an object, but slightly more lightweight because it has one leg instead of two so that it does not need to be offset to become flush with the surface.
Endless Loop ∙ A chain fused together in a circle without using a connector.
Eyeletted ∙ When the legs of an "A" coupling are sealed together permanently at the hole.
Hank ∙ A long string of unspooled chain.
Jump Ring ∙ An attachment typically used to connect a ball chain to an item such as a stopper in a toilet tank or other such item that is pulled by the chain when in use.
Offset ∙ When the helmet or "eyelet" of the "A" coupling is bent at an approximate 30 degree angle.
Open Ball ∙ A hollow ball that is crimped onto a chain with a pair of combination pliers for a variety of purposes. Open balls are often used as stop balls on electrical switches, as a more decorative alternative to a pendant on a pull chain, and for connecting two ends of chain in the jewelry industry.
Pendant ∙ An attachment connected to the end of a ball chain that is being used as a pull for a lamp, ceiling fan, or other appliances. Similar in appearance to a sleeve but better suited for small pull chains.
Sleeve ∙ An attachment used to connect a ball chain to small items such as pens or electrical outlet caps for retaining purposes. Similar in appearance to a pendant but better suited for retention.
Split Ring ∙ Another term for "key ring".
T304 ∙ The highest grade of stainless steel.
Tensile ∙ The breaking point of a chain.
XL Technology ∙ A higher strength chain that adds additional pull strength without added weight.
